After some days of discussion, we decided to go to Freetown to recover the stove. We recruited some wagoneers and laborers, in addition to Sando and his men. The King’s forces swept through, and according to Soren and Dismas had laid an enchantment on the stove, to protect it from evil. We loaded it up and departed soon the next day. It was not so easy on the way back, and we heard wolves… but not merely wolves.
We lit torches and lanterns and prepared. The tales of Red Hood circled in my mind when I saw the great beasts. They would humble the timberwolves that stalk the northern wilderness. But the light held them at may, and perched atop of the stove, ready to make every heartbeat count, I could see them as clear as the dusk allowed. We fled as fast as the wagon would allow the next day.
We left the stove in Richacre, to retrieve later. We will check on the tower first, and then decide on what we’d like to do next.
[A day later]
We arrive at the Haunted Tower, and find it’s been broken in and that a major force had passed through on the behest of the King’s Marshal and a new Duke. We got to meet Lord Clint, the legendary Paladin. He has been granted the lands south of the Eagle River, and taken control of all the border towers. Including our secrets. We discuss with him a deal that would let us continue to use the tower, if we’re so willing to pay rents on the tower. We are mulling the opportunity, but I feel a desire to push west and north. Still, the Briars and Skull Mountain have a calling all their own.
We would later head up the road and retrieve my crossbow. It’s expensive, and I don’t wish to part with it, just yet.
