Merrin’s Journal Patron's Seaward, Session 1

King’s 29, Low 14, Moonday: Joined with a pair of scholars, one of high birth, another of … well, he doesn’t act nearly as bookish as his compatriot. Feels he has a story to him kept close.

We decided to head to Freetown to search the town for spoils abandoned by the bandits.  Brought into our employ a shorty.  Brother named Cuy.  He’ll be useful if we run into trouble, though hopefully not that much so soon.

King’s 29 Low 15: Another man has joined us, named Bill.  Skilled enough as it is.

Departed down the briar road.  At the crossroads, a festival by the locals attempting to encourage the local lords to settle a dispute over who will control the territory so the merchants might establish a town.  One of the lords was keeping the peace.  I don’t recall who…

The mead was good.

King’s 29 Low 16: Hot day on the road this day.  Fortunately we were carrying light, the mounts were slick under the blankets a fair bit.  Poor fellas.  Made it to Merlin’s Tower.

King’s 29 Low 17: Reached Falcon Tower.  Windy conditions.

King’s 29 Low 19: Reached Eagle Tower.  Apparently there are foreigners from Yashima, or some similar place.  They had strange tales to tell of masters and grand masters.

King’s 29 Low 20: Pushed out along the river edge.  Camp being kept cold.  Bill has first watch.

King’s 29 Low 21: Bill is not perhaps the man to be trusted with watch in the future.  An ogre threw a stone at him, and he was lucky he had some luck yet in his bag.  I struck true at the menace, and with it being surrounded, we managed to make it flee, where it was quickly slew thereafter.

There was, I realize, a trail that was impossible to miss.  Tracing it back, we found a grotto, where the ogre had clearly hid in day.  There was a fair bit of gold to be found, though we left it to return later.  Few would walk back along our same route, so the harm was little.

We then realized this small trail crossed a larger one, and this brought us to the edge of Freetown.  Goblins have taken residence, but the midmorning sun was melting their resolve, fortunate for us.  We found an isolated manse, older than the settlement far as I know, if the stove is anything to go by.

We encountered little resistance, and killed most easily.  My insistence to take a goblin prisoner for questioning was somewhat preemptive.  He was uncooperative, and it could have gone either way when his guards jumped us.  Dismas was jittery, despite no blow seriously falling on him.

A search of the mansion was cut short, as Dismas realized a guard shift was near, and we set up an ambush in the entrance hall.  No more than the whisk of the air was heard.  The problem dealt with, we searched on.  Dismas found a secret room underground, and his new sword warned him of a potential danger.  We triggered the trap from a distance, and fortunate, for apparently poison was used as part of it.  Some particularly valuable books recovered, if their ‘oohs/aahs’ are anything to go by.

We saw a Ki-rin earlier in the day too.  Wonder where it came and went.

King’s 29 Low 22: Got back to Eagle Tower.  Reported our discovery of the goblins. The mages determined the sword and a shield we found are significant magic, and the type of scroll and potion.  It was funny seeing Shorty’s reaction to us granting him the scroll.  I Bill claimed the shield, Dismas the sword, Soren the healing potion, and I the invisibility.  I’ll put this to good use somewhere.

King’s 29 Low 23: searching for a superior, I’ve a feeling I’ve enough experience to me ta convince a mentor my way.
